The Point

Holistic Scoring Guide

All journalists at Poinciana High School must complete the following form every Friday. If you do not complete this form, you will receive a “0” for the week.

  • BRAINSTORMING

I realize that I am a student journalist. I am the eyes and ears of the school. Therefore, I made sure to wear my journalism cap throughout the previous week. I took note of possible story ideas, which I shared at the meeting.
  • GATHERING NEWS

One of the first steps in the journalism process is leaving the newsroom to "gather news", which usually means covering a school event or conducting an interview. "Gathering news" can also be emailing, online research and/or phone calls. In the description below, describe what you have done this week that could be labeled "gathering news".
  • If "yes", then describe in the field below.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography is an important aspect, but it requires more than just pushing a button on a camera. All student journalists are required to organize photos after taking them. You should remove the SD card from the camera after each photo assignment and give to the teacher.
  • If "yes", then describe in the field below.
  • WRITING

Writing is an important aspect of journalism. Explain what writing you have done this week in the field below.
  • Editing is crucial. A rough draft is not publishable. You must read over your work and make it the best it can be. Then a student editor must read it. And finally, the teacher. If answer is "yes", please describe in the field below.
  • GRAPHIC DESIGN

Design is one of the final steps in the journalism process. Describe your contribution in the field below.
  • ADVERTISING

Every student is required to sell one ad every grading period. If you have any questions, please see teacher.
