Students who sit during the Pledge of Allegiance are ignorant and selfish.

It all started two years ago with pro football player Colin Kaepernick, when he began kneeling during the National Anthem before games.

While Kaepernick no longer plays in the National Football League, his protest lives on and has spread throughout colleges, high schools and middle schools.

The National Anthem protests have extended to students claiming that they are protesting by sitting during the morning Pledge of Allegiance.

Many students at Poinciana do not stand for the Pledge, which I believe is misguided. Most are just lazy.

But a handful claim they are sitting in protest, just like Kaepernick.

Student Josue Pineiro writes that all students should stand for the Pledge.

Kaepernick’s reasons for kneeling revolve around perceived racism.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick said of his motivation for protesting.

The first reason I believe students, and even professional athletes, are misguided is that the reasons they give are just not true.

Harvard Professor Roland Fryer – a black man – studied more than 1,000 police shootings in 10 major police departments in Texas, Florida and California.

He found that officers were more likely to fire their weapons when the suspects were white. These findings published in the New York Times and undercut the idea of racial bias in police shootings.

Just because a police shooting is shared on social media a million times doesn’t mean it happened a million times.

Statistics show that a black man has a greater chance of being struck by lightning than being shot by a police officer.

If someone said they were protesting lightning strikes, we would

laugh at them. Why is Colin Kaepernick taken seriously?

The second reason is that the protest is misdirected and self-defeating.

The Pledge and the flag is a celebration of the freedoms we all share.

Just because there is one racist cop here or there or some other problem in the nation – that isn’t worth protesting the country as a whole.

During the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955, Martin Luther King, Jr. protested the bus system that forced black riders to sit in the back – not the entire country.

He never denigrated the flag, Pledge of Allegiance or National Anthem.

In fact, he did the opposite.

He said the people oppressing blacks are the ones denigrating the flag and what it stands for.

The flag stands for freedom. Why would someone protest a symbol of freedom to highlight oppression?

Furthermore, we have real life examples of what happens to people in other countries who protest their flag. They are usually taken away and never heard from again.

The fact that a person can sit during the Pledge is proof of the freedom it represents.

I come from a long line of relatives who served in the military. My great grandpa, two uncles and mom served with distinction.

I stand up for them because I love them. They are very close.

The Pledge is a sign of honor and respect.

I have been in the NJROTC program for more than six years. I was 10 years old when I first put on the uniform.

I understand what it means to serve something greater than yourself, and I am in awe of those who gave their life to save mine.

Inside I cry, and I recognize these heroes for what they did.

I also stand for those who didn’t die but acted heroically nonetheless.

For example, the 2016 film, “Hacksaw Ridge,” highlights the sacrifice of Desmond Doss, a real person, for saving 75 men during World War II.

How would you feel if you served in a war zone only to be greeted when you returned with students sitting during the Pledge?

Students have two legs and two arms.

Stand up and put your hand over your heart.

It resembles a sign of honor and dignity to those people who served.

There are many worse countries to live in. There are few better. If you are benefiting from living in this country, show some gratitude.

We all are blessed.

If you have a real gripe, go protest. But leave the country out of it.

She has been nothing but good to you.

Love your family.

And to love your whole family is to love the flag.

This is so well said and explained. People just can’t be themselves so they have to copy what others do wrong why don’t they copy what is right. Learn to be part of the solution not the problem.
If you are not grateful for the freedom that you have in this country and you gonna disrespect our flag then go back to your country.NH95
