The Poinciana boys’ basketball team welcomes new head coach Richard Victor after former head coach, Shane Whitsett, stepped down last year to accept a coaching position at Vero Beach High School.

Victor assumed the head coach position this year. Victor is experienced in the coaching field as he’s coached high school and college basketball before.

According to the players, Victor has brought a lot of tips and pointers with him, giving the team more insight from a knowledgeable source.

Assistant varsity coach Craig Walls said, “this season we plan on building a culture where all of our players can achieve success academically and athletically, which will make them more desirable to colleges.”

The team started on a good track as they won their first preseason game. Although they lost the rest of the preseason games, the players still have a positive outlook for this season.

“Our preseason could have been better, but I think we’ll definitely have a successful time this season,” Senior Benjamin Pringle said, who is a starter.

The players think their extra focus on the offensive side-which has been weak compared to the defensive side in the past-will help improve their chances of winning more games and push for regional play offs.

“Coming on top from last year and losing quite a few of our play makers has other teams thinking that we are not a challenge, but we will show different this season,” said senior varsity basketball player Charles Pierce.

The boys’ basketball coaches have a goal of building confidence and motivation within in the team, which can apply to school and on the court.

“We’re going to try to build mental toughness and resilience by putting players in situations where the odds are stacked against them, such as being fouled or putting four players against five,” Walls said.

The players of the varsity basketball team plan for the season to be nothing, but hard battles and wins.

“If we accomplish our performance goals, we will be in a situation to win any game,” Walls said.
