The Poinciana High School Color Guard has exploded from five girls last year to nearly two dozen students this year.

That’s a better than 400 percent increase.

“My goal is always to get better every single year,” said Band Director Steve Velez, who oversees the color guard. “If we keep working as hard as we have been, there is no doubt in my mind that this year will be better.”

Many students attribute the vast increase to word of mouth.

We all have the same passion and we enjoy doing it all together,” said Color Guard Captain Natalie Irizarry.

The meaning behind color guard is adding a visual image to the music that the band is playing.

“When we are all in sync, it looks really good,” Irizarry said, adding that the team is jelled into what she describes now as a family.

Sophomore Grayson Henry said she first took an interest in color guard last year – especially at the talent show, which featured two of the five members performing a dance routine.

The way that they threw the flags around and the fun they were having on the stage drew her to it, she said.

Henry, a drama student, felt as though she needed to expand her horizons and not only focus on one thing.

“I would recommend guard to anybody that has commitment,” Henry said. “Anybody that wants to do it, I say do it.”

Junior Justice Serrano, the only male member on the squad, said he is looking forward to a great year of being a part of the color guard family.

“It feels really good to be in color guard,” said Serrano.

“It brings out the performer in me because when you go out there you have to be the best.”
